It was the mid 1960s and the Munro family was preparing for a monumental event: After years of planning, the family was realizing its dream to own a furniture store.
The grand opening of Wall Units Home Furnishings in Long Beach attracted many local residents. And with high-end furniture from locations such as Europe and South America, the store quickly garnered a reputation for being “hip and happening.”
It was a true family effort. Ken Munro handled accounting and finance, and his son Doug excelled at sales. Meanwhile, Doug’s wife Mary selected items for the store and handled paperwork, and their kids worked in the warehouse.
Then, in the 1980s, recession hit. Customers’ needs shifted, and in response Wall Units Home Furnishings transitioned away from the exotic and into the basic.
As the recession waned, a large building became available directly across from Wall Units Home Furnishings. The Munro family saw an ideal opportunity to revisit its roots and re-enter the higher-end furniture market. Within a year, the first Munro’s Furniture showroom opened across from Wall Units Home Furnishings.
In 2001, the family opened a second location in Santa Ana to meet growing demand in Orange County. As with the Long Beach store, the new location offered exceptional quality and customizable furniture at competitive prices.
Today, Munro’s furniture is operated by the third generation—Kent, Cory and Gregg Munro, along with their parents Doug and Mary—and the business remains grounded in the same qualities that set it apart from Day One: trustworthiness, quality, value… and a passion for great furniture.
